Creating a block of one-to-one appointments
WriteUpp's Block Bookings functionality is designed for Group Bookings, but it can also be used as a workaround if you need to create a linked block of one-to-one appointments for a single client.
This can be useful for a course of treatment or a set number of sessions where the same client will attend every appointment, allowing you to manage the sessions together and generate a single invoice for the entire block in just a few clicks.
Please note: This is a workaround rather than a dedicated one-to-one block booking feature. There are some limitations, particularly when using Online Booking. See things to be aware of at the bottom of this article.
Step 1: Create your appointment type
To create a block for a single client, you'll first need to set up an appointment type as a Group Appointment:
- Go to Settings → Scheduling → Appointment Types and create a new type, or edit an existing one.
- Set Group appointment to Yes.
- Enter 1 in the Max Clients field:

- Complete the rest of the appointment type as normal, including the name, duration and cost.
- Save your changes.
Setting the maximum number of clients to 1 means that only one client can be added to each session.
Step 2: Create the block in your diary
Once your appointment type is ready:
- Open your diary and select a free slot.
- Select the Group tab at the top of the appointment modal.
- Select the appointment type you created above.
- Tick the Is this a Block Booking? option.
- Enter the number of appointments you want to include in the block in the Block Length field.
- Choose how often the appointments should recur and adjust the Until field, as required.
- Check the rest of the booking details and save the block. It may look something like this:

This will create the linked appointments in your diary.
Step 3: Add your client
Add the client as an attendee to the block.
Because the appointments are linked as a Block Booking, the client will be added to every appointment in the block, so you don't need to add them individually to each session.
Invoicing for the entire block
You can then create a single invoice covering every appointment in the block:
- Open any session within the block.
- Tick the client.
- Click Actions.
- Select Generate Invoice.

- Choose Entire Block.
WriteUpp will create one invoice containing all of the client's sessions within the block.
Important Information:
This setup uses Group Bookings as a workaround for one-to-one appointments, so it won't behave exactly like a standard one-to-one appointment in every area of WriteUpp.
In particular, take care when making this appointment type available in Online Booking. Because the appointment type is technically configured as a Group Appointment, it will be presented to clients as a group booking option on your booking site.
For this reason, this workaround may be best suited to blocks that you create and manage directly from your WriteUpp diary.
We're sharing this method as a useful workaround for practices that need to create linked one-to-one sessions; it is not currently a full one-to-one Block Bookings feature.
