The New WriteUpp Pay App

Introducing the brand new WriteUpp Pay app, allowing you to take secure in-person card payments using just your mobile device.

With the WriteUpp Pay app available on both IOS and Android, your phone or tablet can be used as a payment device to accept contactless (Tap to Pay) card payments with no separate card reader required. Once connected, your phone will appear in WriteUpp as a payment reader and can be used to take payments through Stripe Unified.

Payments can be initiated either directly from the mobile app or from the desktop version of WriteUpp and completed on your mobile device, giving you flexibility to take payments whether you’re on the go or working from your computer!

Downloading the app

In either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store on your device, search for "WriteUpp Pay" and download it! It's then ready for you to log in using your WriteUpp credentials.  See below for links to both stores too:

Tap to Pay on your phone

If your mobile (or tablet) device supports NFC, you can use Tap to Pay to accept contactless payments directly on your phone.

If your device does not support NFC for Tap to Pay (which is common for tablets), you can still take in-person payments by connecting a WisePad 3 reader through the WriteUpp Pay app.

Once the WriteUpp Pay app is installed and connected to your account:

  • Your phone is registered as a payment device in WriteUpp
  • It appears in the Stripe integration reader list
  • You can take payments directly from the app or complete payments initiated from desktop

From within the app, you’ll see a list of unpaid appointments and invoices linked to your WriteUpp account. Selecting one of these allows you to take a contactless payment directly on your phone.

Optional: Connect a WisePad 3 card reader

If you'd prefer to use a dedicated card reader, you can also connect a WisePad 3 device through the WriteUpp Pay app.

Once paired via Bluetooth:

  • The WisePad 3 can be selected as your preferred payment method
  • Payments can be taken using the reader instead of Tap to Pay (your phone)
  • You can switch between Tap to Pay and the WisePad 3 within the app settings

Another benefit of connecting a WisePad 3 reader is that it allows the customer to insert their card and enter their PIN to complete the payment, which is useful for transactions over the contactless limit.

Payment flow

When a payment is initiated:

1.  The app connects securely to Stripe

2.  The ‘Hold card here’ screen appears on your phone (or WisePad 3)

3.  The client taps their card or device to complete the payment

Once the payment is successful:

  • The existing invoice in WriteUpp will automatically be marked as paid
  • If no invoice exists, one will be created and marked as paid
  • The transaction will appear in your Stripe dashboard

You can also optionally send an email receipt to the client directly from the app after payment is taken.

Requirements

To use the WriteUpp Payments app:

  • You must have an existing WriteUpp account
  • Stripe Unified must be connected in WriteUpp
  • At least one Stripe location must be configured in your Stripe account for card readers
  • Your mobile device must support NFC for Tap to Pay (unless you are connecting a Wisepad 3, which requires Bluetooth to pair)
  • Location permissions must be enabled on your device for payments to work
  • To take payments, your device must have a stable internet connection, either through Wi-Fi or 4G.

You can find everything you need to get started with the app, either by using NFC to take payments directly on your device, or by pairing a Wisepad 3, below.  As always, our team are here to support you and are more than happy to chat to you about the app. Please get in touch via live chat or on support@writeupp.com.
